Germany’s Leo Appelt surprised the field to win the Junior division’s Individual Time Trial Tuesday.
Appelt defeated American’s Adrien Costa and Brandon McNulty, who won the silver and bronze medals.
Appelt was early out of the start house and set a blistering time of 37 minutes, 45 seconds to better the
No. 1-ranked Costa, who has not lost a time-trial all year.Costa said he was surprised by Appelt’s performance.
“I was surprised too,” Appelt said. “I still can’t believe it. I road my race and was fast.”
With Costa and McNulty finishing on the podium, the U.S. has currently won a total of
four medals at the Junior level in the Individual Time Trial. They joined fellow teammates
Chloe Dygert and Emma White who finished first and second in Monday’s women’s time-trial.
