Well Did He? Oh Yes He Did Four for Four for Sagan

-by Michael Hopkins

Coming the day before the time trial stage four, the longest stage of the race, had all the ingredients necessary to provide a surprise winner. The gold rush town of Sonora hosted its first ever stage. The riders started by heading south on historic Highway 49, the saw-tooth course profile provided multiple climbs along a 65.2 mile stretch known as the Mother lode. The question of the day was whether or not Peter Sagan could win his fourth straight stage. In addition to being the longest stage of this year's race, six KOMs and two sprints were also thrown in for effect.

Sagan Storms to Third Stage Win Increases Overall Lead

-by Michael Hopkins

Today's stage three of the AMGEN Tour of California presented a 115.26 mile day full of moderate climbing and what set up to be a bunch sprint for a first time finish in Livermore. In a move that would be applauded by the the peloton but unwelcome by the spectators, this year the AToC will not include the climb of Sierra road for the first time in the seven-year history. Climbing the more rider-friendly Calaveras road, the racers will pass through Livermore, with sprint points awarded downtown.

The 2012 AMGEN Tour of California got underway with a 115.5 mile jaunt through Santa Rosa to Santa Rosa featuring beautiful views of the California wine country along, with a mix of relatively mundane terrain intermingled nicely with some noticeable bumpy sections. The parcours followed much the same route as does Levi Leipheimer's Gran Fondo.

Sagan Scores His Second and Extends His Overall Lead

-by Michael Hopkins

Stage 2 of the AMGEN Tour of California started in the shadow of the golden gate Bridge, before the riders stood nearly 70 miles of rolling coastal roads before the stage got tough. With over 4,900 feet of climbing in the last 46.5 miles the course would likely put an end to any early breakaway. The day’s second major climb, Bear creek road, is 20 miles from Santa Cruz, though the narrow, twisty road that follows may impede any chasers in pursuit of a break..
